Organic Chemistry — every functional group in one place

VCE Chemistry · Functional groups · 8 flashcards, free to study.

Naming, suffixes, key reactions. Built for the Unit 3 organic synthesis SAC.

Suffix for alcohols
-ol (e.g. ethanol).
Suffix for carboxylic acids
-oic acid (e.g. ethanoic acid).
Suffix for aldehydes vs ketones
Aldehydes: -al (CHO at end). Ketones: -one (C=O in middle).
Functional group in an ester
–COO– (carboxylate + alkyl group from alcohol).
Esterification — reactants & catalyst
Carboxylic acid + alcohol → ester + water; conc. H₂SO₄ catalyst, heat.
Why are carboxylic acids weak acids?
Only partially ionise in water — Ka << 1.
What is an amine?
NH₂, NHR, or NR₂ group — derived from ammonia by replacing H with carbon chains.
How to test for a C=C double bond
Decolourisation of bromine water without UV — addition reaction.
