VCE Mathematical Methods exams 2026: the mistakes the examiner reports keep naming
Mathematical Methods Exam 1 is on Thursday 5 November, 9:00 am to 10:15 am. Exam 2 is on Friday 6 November, 11:45 am to 2:00 pm. Those times come from the VCAA timetable and include reading time. We read the 2024 and 2025 examination reports for both exams and pulled out the errors VCAA names, in its own words.

Mistakes in both exams
Not showing working
“In questions where more than one mark is available, appropriate working must be shown.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 1 report, Advice to students
“Appropriate working must be shown for questions worth more than one mark.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
This one appears in the general comments of both exams, and again question by question. Even with a CAS in Exam 2, write the setup line. In Exam 1 the report adds that “A correct answer must emerge from correct working” (2024, Question 1b).
Brackets
“In general, brackets were not used well.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
“Correctly using brackets eliminates the potential for ambiguity or errors in calculations and ensures that the order of operations is clear.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 1 report, Areas for improvement
The 2025 Exam 1 report singles out the product and quotient rules, and the 2024 Exam 2 report found coordinates written without a closing bracket. Both are slips you can fix by checking every answer line for matching brackets.
Answering a different question from the one asked
“Some students found the average value when the average rate of change was required.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
“Some students worked out the average rate of change instead of the average value.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 1d
The same swap, in opposite directions, in consecutive years. Underline the quantity the question asks for before you start.
Variance instead of standard deviation, one coordinate instead of two
“they worked out the variance, they did not proceed to compute the standard deviation.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 3aii
“only gave the x-values. Both coordinates were required.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 1a
The 2024 Exam 2 report describes the variance slip again in Question 4b.ii. Reread the last line of the question, then your last line of working, and check they match.
Messy presentation
“Where multiple, conflicting answers are given, full marks cannot be awarded.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 1 report, Areas for improvement
“Scanned images are used for assessing, so it is essential that students write clearly to ensure their answers are easily read.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 1 report, Advice to students
Exam 1: no technology, 40 marks
The 2024 report describes Exam 1 as “eight short-answer questions worth a total of 40 marks” completed “without the use of technology or notes” (2024 report, General comments). Check the VCAA specifications for 2026 in case anything has changed.
Graph sketching
“Very light or dashed lines, such as those used for asymptotes, may not be visible for the assessors and should be drawn dark enough to be visible.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 1 report, Areas for improvement
The same report asks for coordinate pairs in curved brackets and for cosine graphs to show symmetry. Go over every asymptote in dark pen or 2B pencil after you sketch.
Naming the function you were given
Both Exam 1 reports say students must use the function names from the question. The 2024 report says a derivative of a function defined in the question should not be written with a different name. The 2024 report also says command terms such as “‘verify’, ‘show that’ and ‘hence’ have precise meanings”.
Exam 2: with CAS
Exact answers
“In all questions where a numerical answer is required, students should give an exact value unless otherwise specified.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
The 2024 report lists five questions where students lost marks for giving approximate answers. In 2025, Questions 4a and 4giii say the same. The reverse also happens: in 2025 Question 4gii, “Some students gave their answer in exact form, not correct to two decimal places as required by the question.” Read the answer format before you press enter.
‘Show that’ questions
“Students should ensure they practise ‘show that’ questions.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
“This was a ‘show that’ question and students were required to show the algebraic steps.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 2a
The 2025 report adds that some students “used a combination of their CAS and algebraic steps and were unable to gain full marks”. Decide which method you are using for a show-that question and stay with it.
CAS used badly, or not used
“Students should check the values they enter into their CAS as some students had the correct definite integral but ended up with an incorrect answer.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 1d
“Some students inefficiently attempted to find the equation by hand, rather than selecting to use their CAS, and made errors.”VCAA 2025 Mathematical Methods 2 report, Question 4d
Both directions cost marks: typing in the wrong numbers, and doing by hand what the calculator does in one line.
Interval notation and transformations
“A number of students did not use interval notation correctly, writing the correct values in reverse order.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
On transformations, the 2024 report says most students found the horizontal translation but not the vertical one in Question 1d.i, and that Question 1d.ii “was not done well”. The 2025 report adds that “the transformations had to be in the correct order” (Question 1e).
Missing parts of the question
“Students should re-read questions to make sure they are answering all the required parts.”VCAA 2024 Mathematical Methods 2 report, General comments
How to use this before 5 and 6 November
- Take one past Exam 1 and one past Exam 2 under timed conditions. Mark them, then reread the matching examiner's report and tick every error you made that it names.
- Make a one-page list of your own repeat mistakes (brackets, exact versus rounded, variance versus standard deviation). Read it before each practice paper and again in reading time.
- Redo only the questions where you lost marks, writing every line of working as if the assessor cannot see your CAS screen.
For how to read a report properly, see how to use VCAA examiner reports.
What this page can't tell you
Two years of reports describe two cohorts, not this year's questions. The mistakes here are habits, which is why they are worth practising out. Where the published reports show a formula, we have paraphrased rather than copied it, so read the full reports for the worked solutions.
Practise the habits the reports ask for
Do a Methods question, then paste in your working. StudyDesign AI marks it against the published criteria and points at the line where the marks went, whether that was a missing bracket, no working shown or the wrong quantity. It won't do the question for you.
