Where does the Krebs cycle occur?
Mitochondrial matrix.
Inputs and outputs of glycolysis
In: 1 glucose, 2 ATP, 2 NAD+. Out: 2 pyruvate, 4 ATP (net 2), 2 NADH.
Role of NADH and FADH₂
Electron carriers — donate electrons to the ETC to drive H+ pumping and ATP synthesis.
Where is most ATP produced?
Oxidative phosphorylation (ETC + chemiosmosis) — ~26–28 of the ~30–32 total ATP.
Final electron acceptor in aerobic respiration
Oxygen — combines with H+ to form water.
What does anaerobic respiration in animal cells produce?
Lactic acid + 2 ATP (per glucose).
Why is anaerobic respiration less efficient?
No ETC is used — only 2 ATP per glucose vs ~30 aerobically.
Link reaction (pyruvate oxidation) — where & products?
Mitochondrial matrix. Pyruvate → acetyl-CoA + CO₂ + NADH.
Total CO₂ produced per glucose (aerobic)
6 CO₂ — 2 from link reaction, 4 from Krebs.
